Russian Resident Alena Kovpar Highlights Everyday Indian Realities That Fascinate Foreign Visitors

Russian resident Alena Kovpar highlights everyday Indian realities that often surprise first-time visitors, including stray dogs in urban areas, barefoot practices in clinics, bamboo scaffolding, dense city life, vibrant clothing culture, temple integration, religious diversity, movie intervals, and food traditions, revealing contrasts between local normalcy and outsider perceptions.

A video shared by Russian national Alena Kovpar, who currently resides in India, has drawn attention for documenting everyday aspects of Indian life that often surprise first-time visitors. The observations focus not on monuments or popular tourist destinations, but on routine cultural and urban practices that locals typically regard as ordinary.

One of the first elements highlighted is the widespread presence of stray dogs across Indian streets. Unlike several European countries where stray dogs are rarely seen, street dogs in India are commonly observed in urban and semi-urban areas, often resting outside shops, crossing roads, or being informally cared for by local communities.

Kovpar also noted the cultural practice of removing footwear before entering medical clinics. In many parts of India, leaving shoes outside indoor spaces such as hospitals and clinics is associated with cleanliness and cultural tradition. This results in rows of footwear placed outside entrances, which can appear unusual to those unfamiliar with the practice.

Another observation concerns construction sites, where workers are often seen using bamboo scaffolding to scale significant heights. This traditional method, widely used across South Asia due to its affordability and flexibility, can appear unconventional to foreign observers accustomed to modern metal scaffolding and extensive safety equipment.

The video further describes the dense and continuously active soundscape of Indian cities. Traffic noise, constant vehicle horns, street vendors, public announcements, construction activity, and festive sounds combine to create an environment of continuous auditory activity.

Kovpar also observed the widespread presence of temples integrated into everyday surroundings. Temples are frequently located within markets, residential areas, roadside spaces, and commercial zones, reflecting the deep integration of spirituality into daily life rather than separation from it.

The use and cultural significance of gold and jewellery was another point of interest. Gold is commonly associated with weddings, festivals, family traditions, and fashion, maintaining a visible presence across social and cultural occasions.

Clothing and textile culture also stood out, particularly the vibrancy and affordability of garments available in local markets. Traditional garments such as kurtas and sarees, along with embroidered fabrics and street fashion, contribute to a visually diverse marketplace environment.

She further noted the high population density in residential areas, where homes, shops, food stalls, vehicles, and places of worship often coexist within compact urban layouts. This creates a closely integrated and highly active community structure.

Transportation patterns also formed part of her observations. Scooters and motorcycles are extensively used for daily commuting, transporting goods, and carrying families, contributing to a dynamic and crowded road environment that differs significantly from car-dominant traffic systems in many countries.

Kovpar additionally highlighted India’s religious diversity, noting her surprise at the visible presence of Christian communities, particularly in regions such as Kerala, Goa, and parts of the Northeast, challenging common stereotypes about the country’s demographic composition.

Food culture was also referenced, especially the large portion sizes served in traditional Indian platters, which combine multiple dishes in a single meal experience and are closely associated with hospitality traditions.

She also mentioned the practice of movie intervals in Indian cinemas, where screenings are paused midway to allow audiences to purchase snacks, socialize briefly, and then resume the second half of the film, creating a distinctive cinematic experience.

Her observations collectively illustrate the contrast between routine local practices and outsider perceptions, highlighting how everyday life in India often appears extraordinary to first-time visitors despite being deeply familiar to residents.
